2010 Spring Law Conference

MO-CASE is pleased to once again partner with the Thomeczek & Brink Law Firm to sponsor the 2010 Spring Law Conference.  It will be held on Friday, March 12, 2010 at Lodge of Four Seasons.  The conference rate will remain the same as 2009!  The fee for MO-CASE Supporters is $110 and for Non-Supporters, $135. Please register by the Early Bird date of February 26th to receive this low rate.  Room rate will also remain the same, $99.  You can make your reservations by calling the Lodge at 1-888-265-5500.  Be sure to mention MO-CASE and CEC when making your reservation.  The Conference will begin with registration at 8:00 and will end around 4:00 with a reception sponsored by the Thomeczek & Brink Law Firm until 6:00.

The Distinguished Speaker for this year's conference is Charles L. Weatherly, Sr.  Mr. Weatherly is one of the founding partners of The Weatherly Law Firm, LLP based in Atlanta, Georgia.  Charlie has represented educational agencies across the country in special education matters since 1978 and has practiced exclusively in this area since 1990.  As a seasoned and experienced trial lawyer advocating for educators and school administrators, he has earned a national reputation for his expertise in all facets of special education and anti-discrimination laws. 
As a result of the legal precedents established by cases he has handled over the years, Charlie has been instrumental in shaping federal special education law in this country.  He was involved in Congressional reauthorization and amendment of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and has previously testified before the Senate Disability Policy Subcommittee on the subject.  Additionally, Charlie has provided expert testimony on behalf of educational agencies in litigation matters involving the IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
The breadth of Charlie’s litigation experience includes representation in administrative due process hearings, court proceedings at all levels and formal and informal mediations.  He has represented clients in more than 200 matters that were adjudicated or resolved at various stages of the legal process, many of which involved students with autism and/or the issue of residential placement services.  Charlie has also represented school agencies in more than 100 investigations before the Office of Civil Rights.
Charlie participates on the faculty for many national and state legal institutes and has been a frequent speaker at special education law conferences.  He has also been involved in hundreds of in-services programs, training programs, workshops and seminars on a local, state, regional and national basis.

2009 Winter Institute

MO-CASE recently held the 4th Annual Winter Institute at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield, MO.  Dr. Linda Dorn, University of Arkansas set the stage with the keynote address "Teachers Working Together for Children".  Over 300 educators had the opportunity to attend 10 different break out sessions that followed the same theme, "Leading & Learning".  The attendees came from 67 different school districts and included special educators, regular classroom teachers and counselors and administrators.  Thanks to Dr. Dorn and to all your presenters for a very successful conference.

2010 Special Education Administrators' Conference

The 33rd Annual Special Education Administrators' Conference will be September 26-28, 2010.  The Conference Committee has already started working hard to make this conference an outstanding professional development opportunity for all attendees.  The conference will commence on Sunday, September 26 at 2:30 pm with the Law Conference sponsored by the Missouri School Boards Association.

Exhibitor packets will be mailed to over 150 exhibitors by the first of April.  Space for exhibitors will be limited to 60 booths so it will be first come first serve for exhibit space!  MO-CASE will again offer the Sponsor Showcase and Reception on Monday afternoon for sponsors at the $1500 level and above.  Space will be limited for this as well.  We are looking forward to making a few changes in the format of the Showcase and making it a very beneficial time for both sponsors and attendees.

Conference fees for the 2010 conference will be $190 for MO-CASE Supporters plus the $30 Supporter Fee for a total price of $220.  The conference fee for a Non-Supporter will be $280.

MO-CASE is pleased to announce Rick Lavoie as the Keynote for the 33rd Annual Special Education Administrators' Conference!

Rick Lavoie

Rick Lavoie has served as an administrator of residential programs for children with special needs since 1972. He holds three degrees in Special Education and has served as an adjunct professor or visiting lecturer at numerous universities including Syracuse, Harvard, Gallaudet, Manhattanville College, University of Alabama and Georgetown. His numerous national television appearances include CBS Morning Show, Good Morning Amedca, ABC Evening News and Disney Channel Presents.

Rick serves as a consultant on Learning Disabilities to several agencies and organizations including Public Broadcasting Service, New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Girl Scouts of America, Child Magazine and WETA. He is a member of the Professional Advisor Board of the Learning Disabilities Association.

Rick has delivered his message to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America. He has the distinction of having delivered Keynote Addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States (Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Children with Attention Deficit Disorder).

Rick has held administrative positions at residential programs for thirty years. These experiences at residential school have provided Rick with a "living laboratory" in which he developed and refineed his methods and philosophies related to the education of adolescents with special needs.

Rick is probably best known for his videos "How Difficult Can This Be?: The F.A.T. City Workshop" and "Last One Picked, First One Picked On: The Social Implications of Learning Disabilities". These award-winning films have brought Rick's sensitive and compelling message to countless thousands throughout the world. After viewing the videos, former First Lady Barbara Bush stated, "You really wowed us! I only wish that every parent and teacher in the United States today could also see your program."
